A hearty crowd showed up at the Bristlecone Convention Center for the Ministerial Association Christmas Dinner yesterday, enjoying a hearty dinner of turkey, ham, and all the fixings.  The three hour annual event was free, funded by donations.

Federal and county office are closed today following President Trump’s declaration of today as a temporary federal holiday.  County offices will reopen on Monday.

Are animal rights activists watching the Duck Pond project?  Doug Saunders writes in today’s edition of the Bristlecone Tribune that the insensitive comments made by County Commissioners Paula Carson and Hank Vogler regarding the handling of the ducks during the rebuilding of the botched project, including the possible harvesting of the ducks.  Those comments attracted the attention of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, who acknowledged the tasteless jokes made by the commissioners, and in a statement, the organization confirmed the attempt at humor and in a statement from Catie Cryar of Peta, “with a little ingenuity and kindness, a solution can always be found that shows compassion and respect for wildlife.”

One of the original reasons the project came about was massive water loss from the old pond.  The first attempt at repairing the project led to as much or more water loss from the pond.  The welfare of the ducks and the minimization of water loss will be the focus of the project.

Drivers lined up Tuesday in Elko after a gas station dropped prices as part of a one-day community giveaway. The Sinclair station at 2500 Alta Vista sold regular unleaded and diesel for two dollars a gallon from noon to 6 p.m., backing traffic onto nearby streets as motorists waited their turn.

The station’s owners say the temporary price cut was their way of giving back to the community, even as gas prices elsewhere in eastern Elko County dipped as low as $1.75 a gallon during ongoing fuel price competition.

A newly formed mineral exploration company is setting its sights on Elko County. ICG Silver & Gold has announced plans to purchase the Tuscarora District mining projects from American Pacific Mining and begin a new phase of exploration and development.

The Tuscarora District, located northwest of Elko, has already shown strong potential, with previous drilling by American Pacific Mining reporting high-grade gold intercepts. ICG officials say the company plans expanded exploration work in 2025 and 2026, targeting multiple new drill sites near established mining operations, as they look to advance the historic district’s silver and gold potential.

As 2025 comes to a close, it’s worth taking a moment to look back at a year that moved fast and delivered no shortage of big stories in Nevada.

From bird flu shortages that made eggs hard to find, to fierce debates over public land sales, utility rates, and water shortages, the year brought major developments month by month. Highlights included scrutiny of NV Energy over wildfire insurance and billing practices, repeated cuts to Southern Nevada’s Colorado River water allocations, sweeping environmental legislation signed by Governor Joe Lombardo, and continued controversy over large-scale solar and mining projects. The year wrapped up with lighter moments too — including Nevada’s Capitol Christmas tree, nicknamed “Silver Belle”,  featuring a Washington dinner highlighted by Nevada sourced food including White Pine County beef from Perigo Beef  — closing out a busy and consequential year for the Silver State.

A Powerball ticket sold in Arkansas has claimed the massive $1.817 billion jackpot, ending a record 46 drawings without a winner and marking the state’s first Powerball jackpot win in 15 years. The Christmas Eve drawing produced the second-largest lottery prize in U.S. history, with winning numbers 4, 25, 31, 52, 59 and Powerball 19.

The winner can choose a cash payout of nearly 835 million dollars or annual payments over 29 years. Eight other tickets nationwide won one million dollars, and with the jackpot now claimed, Saturday’s Powerball drawing resets to 20 million dollars.
