The Eureka County Sheriff’s Office reports a felony arrest in Crescent Valley Tuesday following a suspicious person call. Deputies identified the suspect as Dale Hair, a seven-time convicted felon prohibited from possessing firearms. After attempting to flee during a traffic stop early Wednesday morning, Hair crashed his vehicle, ran from deputies, and was taken into custody. A handgun was found on him. Hair now faces multiple charges, including possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, reckless driving, and driving on a suspended license.
The White Pine County Sheriff’s Office handled a variety of calls Wednesday, January fourteenth, according to the daily blotter.
Deputies took reports of lost and found property, including missing vehicle keys and a loss prevention badge recovered at a local school. Two separate reports of elder abuse were investigated, one involving alleged exploitation of a vulnerable adult, and another in Ely where a deputy provided information on obtaining a protection order.
Deputies also responded to a welfare check involving concerns of self-harm, a trespassing complaint at a local business, and a domestic disturbance that was determined to be unfounded.
On area roads, deputies investigated a single-vehicle crash on a state highway and a two-vehicle collision in Ely. One driver was cited after striking a vehicle stopped for a pedestrian in a crosswalk. Reports of a possible intoxicated driver were referred to Nevada State Police, and deputies also investigated a case of online extortion.
Federal prosecutors say a familiar name is again at the center of a major sports betting scandal.
“Sugar” Shane Hennen, a Las Vegas and Pennsylvania gambler, is among 26 people charged in a sweeping point-shaving scheme involving college basketball. Authorities allege at least 39 players from 17 NCAA Division One teams helped rig or attempted to rig nearly 30 games over the past two seasons.
Prosecutors say Hennen was one of several “fixers” who recruited players and paid bribes ranging from ten- to thirty-thousand dollars per game. The scheme allegedly began overseas before expanding to NCAA games as recently as January.
Hennen has faced prior federal gambling charges and is now barred from betting at Nevada sportsbooks.
Governor Joe Lombardo says a newly announced ballot initiative aimed at barring transgender women from female sports is part of his strategy to win re-election in 2026.
Audio obtained by The Nevada Independent shows Lombardo telling supporters he needs a ballot measure to boost turnout in a non-presidential election year, noting his narrow 2022 victory. He said pairing the new sports initiative with the voter ID measure returning to the ballot could help drive voters to the polls.
If approved, the proposal would require publicly funded athletic programs to classify sports by sex and prohibit people assigned male at birth from women’s competitions. The initiative must gather nearly 149,000 valid signatures and pass in two consecutive elections to amend the state Constitution.
Democrats and LGBTQ advocates call the measure discriminatory and a political ploy, while Lombardo’s campaign says it gives voters a chance to protect women’s sports.
Governor Joe Lombardo is entering the 2026 election season with a commanding fundraising lead. New reports show Lombardo has raised more than four-point-two million dollars in 2025 and now has about nine million dollars cash on hand. Two affiliated political action committees add another nearly six million, giving the Republican governor roughly fifteen million dollars overall — more than thirteen million ahead of his closest rival.
Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford raised about two-point-two million dollars late last year and has nearly two million on hand. Washoe County Commission Chair Alexis Hill, also seeking the Democratic nomination, reported raising about two-hundred-seventy-thousand.
In the attorney general’s race, State Treasurer Zach Conine received a major boost from a one-million-dollar donation, while Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro reported more than eight-hundred-thousand cash on hand. Filing for state and local offices opens March second, with the primary set for June ninth.
