Progress is underway to reopen the White Pine Golf Course for the 2026 season.

Cole Burdick told the Golf Course Advisory Board crews are preparing to remove winter tarps and begin watering greens and turf boxes ahead of next week’s planned opening.  New High School Boys Golf Team Coach Terrell Trask told the Board that the big home Golf Meet has been set for April 23rd.

The biggest challenge remains hiring a new golf pro or course manager following the resignation of longtime pro Randy Long. A selection committee has been formed and will soon review applications and schedule finalist interviews.

Board members also discussed a proposed contract with Basin Engineering to bring the course wells back online, reducing the need to purchase city water for irrigation. The contract is scheduled for consideration by county commissioners this week.

The White Pine County Commission heads into a busy meeting Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the White Pine County Library.

Commissioners are set to ratify a letter to the Nevada Department of Taxation confirming the county will keep ad valorem tax rates flat for the upcoming fiscal year, despite last year’s discussion of possible reductions.

They’ll also consider appointing Social Services Director Desiree Barnson as interim grant manager with additional compensation, and recognize Payroll Specialist Terri Martinez as interim human resources officer following recent staff departures.

Other items include approving a corrective action plan tied to a fiscal year 2025 audit finding and adopting a resolution designating signatories for county SNPLMA projects.

The District Attorney is also seeking approval for temporary, read-only email access for a financial consultant to ensure continuity in vendor payments and audit matters following leadership changes in the finance department.

KELY will broadcast the meeting live.

KELY will broadcast CBS News Radio coverage of President Trump's State of the Union address tonight, along with the Democrat response from Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger.  The broadcast begins at 6pm tonight with coverage anchored by Michael Wallace.

White Pine County will be in the spotlight Wednesday as the Nevada Committee on Local Government Finance meets in Reno.

County leaders are expected to brief the committee on recent staff turnover and present an action plan aimed at ensuring compliance with state financial reporting requirements. The panel will also review the county’s designation of a second authorized signatory for financial matters to safeguard continuity and internal controls.

The agenda also includes updates on school district finances in other Nevada counties and potential fiscal oversight actions.

Utah’s wildland firefighting community is mourning the loss of Fire Management Officer Brett Waters.

State officials say Waters passed away from an aggressive form of cancer. He dedicated 48 years to the fire service, including four years serving the state of Utah, where he worked to strengthen wildland firefighting efforts along the Wasatch Front.

Waters also served four years as Incident Commander with Great Basin Team 3, playing a key role in managing major fires, including the Monroe Canyon Fire.

Utah’s State Forester called him a fixture in the firefighting community whose leadership and service will be deeply missed.

Service details will be announced at a later date.

The White Pine County Sheriff’s Office responded to a series of incidents over the weekend, including two felony arrests.

On Friday, deputies arrested 35-year-old Tiana M. Wilson of Ely on charges of possession of a controlled substance and violating conditions of release following a drug investigation. That same day, 48-year-old Angel K. Lyons of Ely was arrested for allegedly aiming a firearm at a child and child abuse.

Deputies also handled multiple motorist assists and reckless driving reports, several referred to Nevada State Police, along with threats, fraud involving a puppy scam, and a reported protection order violation that remains under investigation.

Other calls included a domestic dispute, animal complaints, a city traffic accident, and a welfare check in which a person expressing thoughts of self-harm was transported for medical assistance.

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo is back in the state after meetings in Washington, D.C., with federal officials and fellow governors.

According to his office, Lombardo met with members of the Trump administration to discuss housing availability, federal land management, energy development, trade, and economic growth — all key issues for Nevada.

The governor said the state can’t afford to sit on the sidelines when federal decisions impact its economy, land, and tourism industry.

While in D.C., Lombardo met with the heads of Housing and Urban Development, the Interior Department, the Energy Department, the Office of National Drug Control Policy, and the U.S. Trade Representative.

His office says the goal was to strengthen coordination between Nevada and federal agencies on policies affecting public lands and economic development.

The Nevada DMV says it will continue not issuing or renewing non-domiciled commercial driver’s licenses and commercial learner’s permits.

The move follows a finalized ruling from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration setting federal eligibility standards. The DMV had previously paused issuance under earlier federal guidance.

DMV Director Tonya Laney says the decision reinforces credential integrity, protects federal highway funding, and keeps Nevada in compliance with national commercial licensing requirements.

As a result, the state will not process renewals, transfers, upgrades, reinstatements, or duplicates of non-domiciled credentials, including those previously known as limited-term CDLs.
