Yesterday’s high of 80 shattered the old record set in 2007 of 71 degrees, and broke the record March high temperature for the whole month of 76 back in 2004.  It’ll be even warmer today with a high of 81 degrees expected.

A public notice confirms there will be no contested races for several seats on the Ely City Council.

According to Ely City Clerk Jennifer Lee, only one candidate filed for each of three council positions by the March 13th deadline.

As a result, Janet Walker, Michelle Yeoman, and Jerri L. Williams Harper have all been declared elected to four-year terms, representing seats one, three, and five.

Under Nevada law, no election will be held for those positions.

The White Pine County Sheriff’s Office has released its latest blotter report for March 17th.

Deputies responded to a report of a reckless driver in the city, but the vehicle had left the area before officers arrived. At local schools, a juvenile incident and a separate student fight were investigated, with the fight case forwarded to juvenile probation.

In other calls, deputies looked into a reported court order violation but found the order had expired, and a vandalism case involving a vehicle was documented.

Authorities also responded to a domestic disturbance involving a family member and a child in the home. That case has been referred to child and family services.

No new bookings were reported for the day.

A quiet week in High School Sports.  The Golf Team is in Elko for a tournament today and the Track Team heads to Spring Creek to take on Wells Tomorrow.  Junior Varsity Baseball and Softball are in Yerington for a tournament there Friday and Saturday.

A major shakeup is coming to Southern Nevada high school football.

According to the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association, dozens of Clark County School District schools will move to independent status for the next two seasons, making them ineligible for state championships in the top classifications.

The decision comes as district programs take a stand against powerhouse Bishop Gorman High School, which has dominated the state—winning 16 of the last 17 titles.

District teams will still play each other but will not face Gorman, citing concerns over competitive balance and differing rules between public and private schools.

Officials call the move unprecedented, with 30 schools aligning on the decision. Meetings next week are expected to determine scheduling and the future structure of competition.

Nevada’s lieutenant governor is facing an ethics violation ruling.

The Nevada Commission on Ethics determined that Stavros Anthony violated state law by using official email and social media accounts to promote a task force focused on transgender athletes in women’s sports.

Commissioners voted 3-to-2 to impose a $3,000 civil penalty, along with mandatory ethics training and a requirement to create a formal social media policy. A separate complaint involving staff use was dismissed.

The complaint was filed by Nevadans for Equal Rights Committee, and stems from actions dating back to 2025.

In a related case, the commission also found the lieutenant governor’s chief of staff committed a non-willful ethics violation, resolving the matter with an agreement that includes additional training.

The lieutenant governor’s office has not yet responded to the ruling.

The Elko County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam making the rounds.

Authorities say scammers are calling people and posing as law enforcement, claiming victims have missed court, jury duty, or have an active warrant. In some cases, the calls even appear to come from the Sheriff’s Office due to spoofed caller ID.

Officials say the scammers can be convincing, sometimes playing police radio sounds in the background, and may demand payment—often in cash or bitcoin—to “clear” a warrant.

The Sheriff’s Office stresses it will never call and ask for money over the phone. Any legitimate warrants must be handled in person through the courts or at the office.

If you receive one of these calls, hang up immediately and contact the Sheriff’s Office directly to verify.

Nevada is mourning the loss of a political trailblazer.

Sue Wagner, the state’s first female lieutenant governor, has died at the age of 86. Governor Joe Lombardo has ordered U.S. and Nevada flags to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset in her honor.

Sue Wagner broke barriers for women in public service, serving in the Nevada Legislature before becoming lieutenant governor and later joining the Nevada Gaming Commission.

In a statement, Lombardo called Wagner a “trailblazer” and “dedicated public servant,” praising her decades of service and lasting impact on the state.

Wagner’s legacy helped shape Nevada politics and opened doors for future generations. She is being remembered across the Silver State for her leadership and historic contributions.

A new study from the Public Policy Institute of California is shedding light on migration trends between California and Nevada.

Researchers found that between 2020 and 2024, about 40 percent of Californians moving to Nevada were registered Republicans, compared to 25 percent registered as Democrats.

Republican Assembly candidate Katrin Ivanoff says the numbers reflect frustration with taxes and policies in California, along with Nevada’s political climate, including leadership under Governor Joe Lombardo.

But local real estate experts say politics isn’t the only factor. Las Vegas realtor Lance Sherman says affordability and lifestyle continue to drive the move, with many buyers coming from California’s higher-priced markets.

The study also found that people moving into California during that same period leaned heavily Democratic, at about 54 percent.

And gas prices are pushing upward this morning with the Silver Sage the lowest for cash at $3.63 per gallon for Regular 85 octane.  Most other stations in town are at $3.65, with the Golden Gate up to 3.79, and the Chevron on East Aultman up to $3.95.  Diesel on the East side of Ely is the cheapest at $4.99 at Golden Gate, and the Shell and Chevron on East Aultman with Loves and the Shell Downtown at $5.48, the Great Basin Shell at $5.47, and Sinclair at $5.28 per gallon.  The Silver Sage climbed to $5.52.

White Pine County drivers are paying well below the national, state, and Las Vegas figures on regular gas — about 23 cents cheaper than the U.S. average and nearly a dollar cheaper than Las Vegas or the Nevada average. Diesel is also competitive or lower, especially at the $4.99 stations.
