The White Pine County Commission will hold a special meeting Wednesday, May 6th at 9 a.m. in the White Pine County Library Conference Room in Ely.

Commissioners are expected to consider hiring outside accounting firm Eide Bailly LLP to provide temporary financial support while the county’s Accounts Payable Clerk position remains vacant.  Eide Bailly LLP is an American mid-tier public accounting and ancillary professional services firm headquartered in Fargo, North Dakota, with fifty locations worldwide including in Elko, Las Vegas, and Reno.  The proposed contract would cover accounts payable processing and related services, at a rate of $170.00 to $396.00 per hour, billed in quarter-hour increments, with costs not to exceed 18-thousand dollars unless approved by the board.  The current Interim Finance Director, Gina Rackley, is also a contract employee through her Rackley Financial Services LLC and is also running for mayor of Winnemucca, NV.

In addition, county officials are scheduled to provide an update on several vacant positions, including Human Resources Director, Finance Director, Accounts Payable Clerk, and Golf Course Director.

KELY will broadcast the meeting live.

The White Pine County Sheriff’s Office stayed busy on Tuesday and Wednesday with fraud reports, accidents, disturbances, and multiple assists to Nevada State Police.

Deputies handled welfare checks, investigated property damage, responded to landlord-tenant disputes, and warned several people for fireworks and juvenile motorcycle activity in a park. Reports of gunshots in a county township were determined to be fireworks. Officers also checked an abandoned vehicle near Ely’s water tower, finding it had simply run out of gas.

Nevada State Police made one booking. Michael Watts was arrested on charges including DUI, child endangerment, possession of a firearm while under the influence, expired registration, and child restraint violations. Bail was set at 17-thousand-690 dollars.

The Bureau of Land Management has issued a statewide fire prevention order for Nevada that takes effect Friday.

Under the new restrictions, several fire-related activities will be prohibited on BLM-managed lands to reduce wildfire danger. Those bans include possessing or using fireworks, pyrotechnic devices, or incendiary materials. Explosives, including binary explosive targets, are also prohibited.

The order further bans firing tracer, incendiary, or steel-core ammunition, along with operating combustion engines that do not have a properly installed and working spark arrestor.

BLM officials say the temporary restrictions are aimed at preventing human-caused wildfires during Nevada’s fire season.

Nevada lawmakers are weighing in after Congress ended the 76-day Department of Homeland Security shutdown. President Donald Trump signed a bipartisan funding bill Thursday to restore money for most of the agency, excluding immigration enforcement operations.

Nevada Congressman Mark Amodei, who chairs the House Appropriations Homeland Security subcommittee, said lawmakers had already passed similar legislation multiple times and suggested the White House finally pushed for action when temporary funding began to run out. Amodei also criticized the long delay, saying Congress was playing politics instead of doing its job.

Nevada Congresswoman Dina Titus also responded, saying House Republicans were forced to end what she called a Republican shutdown. Titus said the measure could have passed weeks earlier, avoiding airport delays, security concerns, and missed paychecks for workers.

The shutdown had affected Homeland Security operations since February 14th. Republicans now plan to pursue a separate 70-billion-dollar funding package for immigration enforcement and deportation efforts.

Gas prices continue to surge across America and across Nevada.  Statewide, the average price has jumped by 17 cents in just one week.  It's now five-dollars and 13-cents.  Triple-A says the highest average price can be found in Washoe County where gas is five-45.  With an average price of four-33, White Pine County has the least expensive gas.  Gas is going for five-19 in Clark County.

It’s the last day of the regular season for Spring Sports, and sports teams will be busy.

The White Pine Bobcats baseball team takes on Lincoln County Friday at 11 a.m., looking to snap a three-game losing streak. Despite recent struggles, the Bobcats have dominated the series lately, winning eight of the last ten matchups against the Lynx.

White Pine is coming off a 14-10 loss to Boulder City, but Jacob Derbidge had a big day with two doubles and three runs scored. Vince Cato added two RBI and two stolen bases.

Lincoln County enters on a three-game win streak after exploding for a 24-12 win over GV Christian. Dominic Horlacher struck out nine on the mound and also drove in three runs.

Speed could be key Friday, with both teams among the area leaders in stolen bases.

The White Pine Bobcats softball team faces Lincoln County Friday at 11 a.m., looking to stay hot after three straight road wins. The Bobcats are 13-and-6 and coming off a dominant 15-to-nothing shutout of Lake Mead Christian Academy.

White Pine has scored at least ten runs in its last three games and already owns 11 wins by seven runs or more this season. Speed could be the difference Friday, with the Bobcats averaging six-and-a-half stolen bases per game.

White Pine also beat Lincoln County earlier this season, 7-to-4. The Lynx enter the matchup at 14-and-12.

The Boys golf team will be in Wells today and the Track Team will be in Boulder City this afternoon.

An investor reportedly wants to bring a Major League Soccer team to Las Vegas.  The Athletic says billionaire Grant Gustavson made a formal offer to relocate the Whitecaps from Vancouver to Vegas.  The team is up for sale and has complained that their current stadium does not allow them to generate enough revenue.  That's despite the team's big success on the soccer pitch.

More NIAA controversy in Southern Nevada, but this time it doesn’t involve Bishop Gorman and Football…

Defending Nevada Class 5A baseball champion Basic has been removed from the Southern Region playoff tournament, according to the bracket posted by the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association.

Basic had entered the postseason as the Desert League’s top seed with an 18-and-8 overall record and a perfect 10-and-0 league mark. But the Wolves’ name was replaced with “vacant” on the official bracket ahead of Thursday’s scheduled game against Faith Lutheran.

No official explanation has been released. Requests for comment from the NIAA, Clark County School District, and Basic High School were not immediately returned.

An attorney representing players and families called the disqualification unjust, saying the team was punished over an alleged issue involving a single player without notice or a fair review.

With the change, Faith Lutheran advances to Saturday’s next round game, while Coronado also moves forward in the losers bracket.
