The Ely City Council meets tonight at 5 p.m. at the Ely Volunteer Fire Hall, with a 5:30 public hearing on proposed historic districts along Aultman Street and the Nevada Northern Railway corridor.
Among the agenda items, the council will consider emergency abatement action at 171 Fay Avenue, where the city building official has determined a cockroach infestation is a public nuisance posing an immediate threat to public health, safety or welfare. The proposed action would authorize extermination and removal of the infestation.
The council will also consider two other abatements involving fire hazards — removal of accumulated debris, dry grass and brush at 750 Avenue M, and removal of accumulated debris at 832 Murry Street.
Other business includes a proposal to allow dogs off-leash inside the fenced Broadbent Park Dog Park, approval of a Hercules Gap Trail stabilization project, and a proclamation marking the 120th anniversary of the Nevada Northern Railway's arrival in Ely.
The council will also consider awarding a construction bid for the Steptoe Valley Trap and Skeet Range Hunter Education Building, selecting a conflict prosecutor, and adjusting its November and December meeting schedules for the holidays.
A 36-year-old Las Vegas man missing for nearly three weeks has been found dead in the Lincoln County desert.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office identified him as Andrew Fehrman, who was last seen August first in west Las Vegas.
Authorities say travelers on August 21 found Fehrman’s stranded Toyota 4Runner about 25 miles south of the Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge headquarters. His body was found nearby.
The Clark County coroner ruled Fehrman’s death accidental, caused by extreme heat exposure. The investigation is closed.
Nevada Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar is asking Nevada’s congressional delegation to deploy election observers to U.S. Post Offices ahead of the November midterms.
Aguilar says the observers would help ensure ballots are processed and mailed without disruption. He requested Senators Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen and Representatives Mark Amodei, Steven Horsford, Susie Lee and Dina Titus.
The request comes as a former Utah postal worker faces a federal charge for allegedly throwing away mail, including about 300 ballots intended for voters in Eagle Mountain. Federal prosecutors say Damon Matai Seei admitted discarding the mail in June. The indictment alleges the mail was thrown away to reduce his workload; prosecutors say there is no indication the ballots were targeted based on political affiliation.
Two major Las Vegas casino takeover stories are heading in opposite directions.
Caesars Entertainment shareholders have approved Tilman Fertitta’s roughly 18-billion-dollar acquisition of the company. About 65 percent of Caesars shares voted in favor, with shareholders set to receive 31 dollars in cash per share if the deal closes. The transaction still needs regulatory approval.
Meanwhile, an effort to take MGM Resorts private has fallen apart. People Incorporated, led by Barry Diller, withdrew its roughly 18-billion-dollar proposal after months of discussions, saying the deal wasn’t coming together as hoped.
The contrast is clear: Caesars is moving ahead with a shareholder-approved sale, while MGM remains independent after its proposed takeover was abandoned.
