The White Pine County Commission will meet Wednesday morning with several key issues on the agenda beginning at nine at the White Pine County Library Conference Room in Ely.
A public hearing at nine-thirty will focus on the proposed Charters of Freedom Project, featuring the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights, along with the Civil Rights Amendments. Commissioners will take public input on the proposed location and presentation format.
Commissioners are also scheduled to consider a grant agreement for improvements to the county baseball field at 13th Street and Avenue M, a finding of critical labor shortage in the District Attorney’s Office, and adoption of a county Continuity of Operations Plan.
The board will also consider a three-year GIS services agreement with Geo-Comm, not to exceed fifty-three-thousand, four-hundred-seventy-four dollars.
The meeting is open to the public and will also be broadcast live on KELY.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office reports three arrests following drug investigations this week.
Deputies executing a search warrant Tuesday night in Panaca arrested one person for possession of methamphetamine with intent to sell.
About 105 grams of methamphetamine — roughly a quarter-pound — were seized, along with scales, baggies, paraphernalia, and individually packaged quantities consistent with drug sales.
A separate search warrant in Caliente resulted in two additional drug-related arrests.
The Sheriff’s Office says investigations into drug activity are continuing throughout Lincoln County and asks residents to report suspected drug activity.
A serious crash involving a semi and a smaller vehicle closed U.S. Highway 93 in both directions north of Wells last night.
Emergency crews report the crash sparked a vehicle fire that spread into nearby wildland. One person has been killed. The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of family.
Fire crews from Jackpot, Wells, Las Vegas and North Las Vegas are assisting, along with Nevada Highway Patrol and the Elko County Sheriff’s Office.
The highway has reopened after an extended closure while emergency crews work and investigators examine the crash.
The High School Sports weekend gets under way tonight with the Ladycats Volleyball team taking on Round Mountain beginning at 4.
The Ladycats improved to seven-oh-and-one after sweeping Eureka three sets to none on Saturday, winning 25-to-8, 25-to-15, and 25-to-16.
Round Mountain is two-and-one after also posting a three-set sweep, beating Tonopah 25-to-21, 25-to-20, and 25-to-19.
Congratulations to former Ladycat Softball player Paige Hayward, who has announced her commitment to continue her academic and athletic career at Cerro Coso Community College.
Hayward thanked the Cerro Coso coaching staff for the opportunity to continue playing the sport she loves, as well as her coaches, family, friends and teammates for their support throughout her athletic career.
She especially credited her father for countless hours helping her practice pitching in the backyard.
Hayward says she’s excited for this next chapter and everything ahead.
Nevada’s November election will decide about 30 percent of the state’s district court judgeships, but one Family Court race has already been decided by the Nevada Supreme Court.
The court has ordered Amber Candelaria’s name removed from the ballot in the Family Court Department Z race, after a dispute over how she filed her candidacy paperwork.
Incumbent Judge Michelle Mercer will now be the only candidate on the November third ballot and is on track for another six-year term.
Candelaria called the ruling an injustice, saying voters will have no choice in who serves as their judge.
After eight years of faithful service, the White Pine County Sheriff’s Office is saying goodbye to a very special member of the team — K9-4 Miki.
For eight years, Miki’s keen nose, determination and unwavering work ethic helped deputies find illegal narcotics and assisted with countless traffic stops, searches and criminal investigations.
His work may have happened quietly and often behind the scenes, but the difference he made was anything but small. Miki helped take dangerous drugs off our streets and played an important role in keeping White Pine County safe.
Now, after eight years of wearing the vest and serving the community, Miki is hanging it up for good.
The Sheriff’s Office says Miki has earned the chance to trade his working days for long naps, plenty of attention and a well-deserved retirement.
Thank you, Miki, for your service, your loyalty and all the lives you helped protect.
Good boy, Miki. Job well done.
