Gas prices continue to climb in Nevada, even as the national average is moving lower.
AAA reports Nevada’s average for regular gasoline at about $5.49 a gallon, up roughly 13 cents from a week ago. Nationally, the average has fallen nearly seven cents to about $4.41.
Here in Ely, KELY’s October first gas price check found regular unleaded ranging from $4.68 to $5.11. Diesel ranged from $6.29 to $6.60.
AAA says September’s national monthly average was a record for the month, while crude oil prices have recently moved back into the 90-dollar-a-barrel range.
Four Northern Nevada veterans are speaking out over Republican congressional candidate David Flippo’s claims about his military record.
The veterans were recorded Wednesday at the Nevada Veterans Memorial Plaza in Sparks for a new digital advertising campaign by the national AFL-CIO. The ads focus on Flippo’s repeated claims that he received a Bronze Star with valor.
The Washington Post reported that Flippo received a standard Bronze Star in 2004, but not the valor distinction, which is awarded for heroism under enemy fire.
Flippo apologized last week and attributed the inaccurate descriptions to campaign staff, including confusion with an Outstanding Unit Award that did carry a valor designation. His campaign has also provided military records supporting that explanation.
The AFL-CIO says the new ads will feature veterans explaining why they believe the distinction matters. Supporters of Flippo, including Combat Vets for Congress chairman Bill Conrad, have defended him and called the reporting unfair.
The issue is now part of the campaign for Nevada’s Second Congressional District.

Nine years after the Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting, families and community members gathered Thursday in Las Vegas to remember the 60 people who died.
At the 1 October Sunrise Remembrance ceremony, Debby Allen remembered her son, Christopher Roybal, who was 28 when he was killed in the 2017 shooting.
Allen said she once believed time healed all wounds, but losing her son taught her that some wounds are simply too deep to heal.
She said families gather each October first not because grief demands it, but because love does — to honor those who were lost and ensure they are never forgotten.
Family members shared memories of loved ones, while Allen’s son, Jayson Williams, sang “Scars in Heaven” in tribute to his brother.
Governor Joe Lombardo told families their courage matters, and said the Las Vegas community will continue to stand beside them.
That’s your morning news from White Pine County and the state of Nevada
