The future of Green Mountain Apartments’ business license is on the agenda for Thursday’s Ely City Council meeting. Council members will consider revoking the license, citing the property as a public nuisance and a threat to public health and the peace of the city. This follows recent cockroach infestations at the apartments and other properties owned by the apartment owner.
Other business includes renewing the city’s health insurance coverage for the coming year, participating in the environmental review for the 2027 oil and gas lease sale, and spending up to 200 dollars on a dedication celebration for Ely’s new dog park.
The meeting begins Thursday at five p.m. at the Ely Volunteer Fire Hall on Mill Street. A podcast of the meeting will be available on all podcast platforms by searching KELY 1230 98.5.

Jon Ralston at the Nevada Independent points out that while Republican turnout in Rural Nevada is exceeding turnout by Democrats by over 30%, Democrats are holding the lead statewide by 5% as of 10pm last night, quoting Ralston: Rural landslides can't offset urban mail.
The White Pine County Sheriff’s Office reports several disturbances in Ely Friday and Saturday, including calls at apartment complexes, a bowling alley, and a casino.
Deputies are investigating the theft of firearms from a county residence and the death of a Nampa, Idaho, man identified as Clifton A. Powell, found at a local hotel Saturday.
Other calls included a reported bomb threat sent by text message, property damage, stalking, and a possible protection order violation.
A 45-year-old McGill man, Colin C. White, was arrested Saturday for obstructing a public officer. His bail was set at 355 dollars.
Deputies also responded to an elk collision, motorist assists, and several welfare checks.

Nevada diesel prices have hit a record high, even as gasoline prices decline. AAA reports the statewide average for diesel reached six-dollars-86 a gallon Sunday. In Ely, diesel topped 6.88, compared with 4-dollars-65 for regular gasoline. University of Nevada, Reno economist Dilek Uz cites limited refining capacity, seasonal demand from agriculture and holiday shipping, and Northern Nevada’s reliance on a single major pipeline. She warns higher diesel costs could increase trucking and shipping expenses, eventually putting additional pressure on grocery and merchandise prices.
Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford is asking the Nevada Supreme Court to revive the state’s so-called fake electors case. Ford says his office appealed last week after a Clark County judge dismissed charges in August against six Republicans accused of submitting a false certificate declaring Donald Trump the winner of Nevada’s 2020 election. Judge Mary Kay Holthus ruled prosecutors failed to present exculpatory evidence to the grand jury and did not establish sufficient evidence of fraudulent intent. Ford says he believes the dismissal should be overturned. A presidential pardon issued last year covers potential federal charges, but not the state case.
Former Nye County Judge Michele Fiore testified Monday before the Nevada Commission on Judicial Discipline, appealing her suspension without pay following a federal jury’s wire fraud conviction. Fiore was accused of misusing more than 70-thousand dollars raised for a memorial statue honoring slain Las Vegas police officers Alyn Beck and Igor Soldo. Fiore denied using the donations for personal expenses and called the prosecution a fake case. President Trump pardoned her in 2025, but the pardon did not resolve the state judicial discipline proceedings. Fiore lost her bid for re-election in June. The commission’s hearing is expected to conclude Thursday.
