The future of Green Mountain Apartments’ business license is on the agenda for tonight’s Ely City Council meeting. Council members will consider revoking the license, citing the property as a public nuisance and a threat to public health and the peace of the city. This follows recent cockroach infestations at the apartments and other properties owned by the apartment owner.  We have posted the official orders for abatement sent to the owner back in March on our web page at kely1230.com.

Other business includes renewing the city’s health insurance coverage for the coming year, participating in the environmental review for the 2027 oil and gas lease sale, and spending up to 200 dollars on a dedication celebration for Ely’s new dog park.

The meeting begins tonight at five p.m. at the Ely Volunteer Fire Hall on Mill Street.  A podcast of the meeting will be available on all podcast platforms by searching KELY 1230 98.5.

In Ely, deputies are investigating a business burglary in which merchandise was stolen overnight. Another report involved a cellphone hack and unauthorized access to bank accounts.

Outside the city, a report of gunfire near a state highway was investigated, but the subject had left before deputies arrived. Reports of cattle creating a highway hazard and a semi-truck running another vehicle off the road were referred to Nevada State Police.

Other calls included domestic disturbance, student harassment, suspicious activity, and repeated harassing phone calls from a county correctional facility.

The Nevada Northern Railway has been awarded up to three-million dollars in federal funding to begin planning the reconstruction of 127 miles of track across White Pine and Elko counties.

The City of Ely and the Nevada Northern Railway Foundation will use the grant for environmental studies, engineering and project preparation, with the goal of restoring freight service and reconnecting the line to Union Pacific.

Freight service ended in 1999, and the project could eventually allow shipments of copper concentrate, fuel, building supplies, limestone and other materials.

Additional funding will be needed before construction can move forward, but the grant represents an important step toward restoring the railroad’s freight connection and supporting economic development in eastern Nevada.

President Donald Trump has entered Nevada’s closely watched Second Congressional District race, criticizing Democratic candidate Teresa Benitez-Thompson during a tele-rally Wednesday. Trump called Benitez-Thompson a “radical Democrat communist” and said he thinks she’s crazy, while backing Republican David Flippo. The candidates are competing to replace retiring Congressman Mark Amodei. Flippo won the Republican primary with Trump’s endorsement. Benitez-Thompson is a former state assemblywoman who most recently served as chief of staff to Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris and House Speaker Mike Johnson made separate campaign stops in Las Vegas this week, as Democrats and Republicans work to build support ahead of the November third midterm elections. Harris joined Democratic gubernatorial candidate Aaron Ford at the Culinary Union, urging members to use their organizing power. Johnson appeared with Republican congressional candidates Carrie Buck and Marty O’Donnell as Republicans fight to maintain control of the House. A U-N-L-V journalism lecturer says rallies can energize existing supporters, but candidates also need to explain how their policies will benefit undecided voters.

Players in Ohio and Pennsylvania each won 2 million dollars, while a New Jersey player won 1 million. The next drawing is Saturday night, so you’ve got time to drive to Idaho or California to buy your tickets.

A proposed natural gas power plant in Fernley is sparking controversy, with three planning commissioners resigning amid a dispute over the project. The plant, proposed by developer Mark IV Capital, could generate up to 324 megawatts to serve businesses, including potential data centers, at the Victory Logistics District. Former commissioner Cody Wagner resigned after attorneys for the developer challenged his impartiality over public criticism of the project. The Nevada Commission on Ethics found Wagner was not prohibited from voting simply because he had expressed an opinion. Meanwhile, the Fernley City Council approved the plant’s conditional use permit on October seventh, bypassing further planning commission review.

A Vegas Golden Knights game led to an unexpected friendship after an emergency room nurse saved a fan’s life. In December, 2025, Southern Hills Hospital nurse Susie Macis jumped into action when 72-year-old Jeannie Cunningham suffered cardiac arrest in the stands. Macis performed CPR for nearly 10 minutes until paramedics arrived. The two women later reconnected and have since become close friends, with plans to attend another Golden Knights game together. Macis is now being honored nationally with HCA Healthcare’s 2026 Compassionate Care Award — recognition for a moment when her training, quick thinking and compassion made all the difference.
