Another record high temperature yesterday of 81 degrees tying the 1980 record.  Cooler temperatures are on tap over the weekend and into next week with some rainfall on the way, but going into the weekend enjoy the warmth, sunny today and a high of 81 degrees.

The Ely City Council will consider several major issues tonight, including a proposed emergency action to deal with a cockroach infestation at a West 15th Street property.

City officials have determined the infestation is a public nuisance and an immediate threat to public health, safety or welfare. The council will consider authorizing the city to exterminate the cockroaches and remove the infestation.

The council will also review Ely’s drinking-water rate study. It could direct staff to examine the potential business impact of higher water, sewer and landfill rates, along with hydrant rental and “will serve” fees.

And the council will consider Resolution 2026-10, establishing historic districts along Aultman Street from First to Eleventh Streets and along Nevada Northern Railway, or East Eleventh Street.

Other agenda items include potential fee studies, NDOT signage at the city dog park, and updates on state and federal funding efforts.

Thursday’s meeting begins at 5 p.m. at the Ely Volunteer Fire Hall on Mill Street. KELY will have a podcast of the meeting available on major podcast platforms Thursday night or Friday morning by searching for KELY 1230 98.5.

The White Pine County Sheriff’s Office is reporting several incidents investigated Tuesday.

Deputies responded to multiple fights and disturbances, including a fight involving two juveniles on a city street. One juvenile was detained on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and taken to the White Pine County Detention Center. The case was forwarded to Juvenile Probation.

Deputies also handled reports involving juvenile trespassing at a school, bullying, and juveniles smoking outside a county facility.

A welfare check involving several children remains under investigation.

Several reports of reckless semi-truck drivers on state highways were referred to Nevada State Police.

And 38-year-old Danyaelle Valdez of Ely was arrested at a local business on an Ely Municipal Court warrant. Bail was set at 240 dollars.

A new Nevada poll shows Republican Governor Joe Lombardo with a narrow lead over Democratic challenger Aaron Ford.

The Noble Predictive Insights poll has Lombardo at 42 percent, compared with 40 percent for Ford, among likely voters. Independent candidate Danielle Ford is at seven percent.

The poll also shows Democrats leading their Republican opponents in the other statewide races, making Lombardo the only Republican currently ahead in the survey.

The poll has a margin of error of about three-point-seven percent.

A follow-up to a story we aired yesterday: Maverick Gaming CEO Eric Persson told the Nevada Independent the company’s planned repurchase of two Elko casinos should close within about three weeks.

Persson says the Gold Country Inn and Maverick Casino Hotel are expected to temporarily close November 30th as ownership is transferred out of a company in Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The closures could affect 239 workers, but Persson says all employees will be rehired, with no disruption to operations.

A similar transfer is planned for the company’s properties in Wendover.

The Vegas Golden Knights return home tonight, hosting the Toronto Maple Leafs at T-Mobile Arena.

Vegas comes in at three-and-one after a six-to-two rout of Seattle on Tuesday, completing a two-game road sweep. Tomas Hertl had two goals and two assists, while Jack Eichel added a goal and three assists.

The Maple Leafs are two-and-two on the young season.

Faceoff is set for seven tonight in Las Vegas.  Pregame begins at 6 here on KELY.

Nevada voters are deciding Question Seven, which would amend the state constitution to require photo identification before voting in person.

Supporters say the measure would increase confidence in elections, while opponents argue Nevada elections are already secure and say there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud.

Same-day registrants would still be able to vote, but would need to show identification and cast a provisional ballot.

Question Seven passed with more than 70 percent of the vote in 2024. Because it would amend the constitution, it must pass in two consecutive elections.

The ten-cent local gas tax motorists pay in White Pine County has roots going back more than three decades.

White Pine County's current code imposes a 9-cent-per-gallon county motor fuel tax. The code traces that tax to County Ordinance 266, adopted in 1991, although an earlier county fuel-tax ordinance dates to 1982.

The Nevada Legislature authorized that nine-cent tax in 1991, when state law allowed counties to impose up to nine cents per gallon by ordinance.

That same 1991 legislation also changed a separate one-cent-per-gallon county fuel tax from an optional tax to a mandatory one. The money from that one-cent tax is allocated to the counties where the fuel is sold.

Together, those two components account for the ten cents per gallon in local county fuel taxes.

White Pine County says gas-tax revenue is used to fund road operations. The county also says its Regional Transportation Commission administers the nine-cent local gas tax, with money generally used for road reconstruction, asphalt overlays and slurry projects.

So, when you see that ten-cent local gas tax on the price of gasoline in White Pine County, it is the result of two separate tax provisions—nine cents authorized by the county, plus one cent required by state law.

As a side note, in California, not only is there a 63.4-cent state tax, but also a 2.25 percent sales tax and additional district fees on top of that.  So a total 33-cent tax is almost a bargain for White Pine County drivers.
