The so-called Blue Wave hit Nevada hard yesterday with preliminary numbers delayed until after Midnight.  Long delays in Clark, Washoe, and Elko Counties held up results from other counties.

Democrat Teresa Benitez-Thompson has made history, becoming the first Democrat elected to represent Nevada's 2nd Congressional District.

Benitez-Thompson defeated Republican David Flippo in a closely watched race for the seat being vacated by longtime Congressman Mark Amodei.

The former Nevada Assembly majority leader campaigned on affordability, economic issues and government accountability.

The victory flips a district that President Trump carried by 14 points in 2024 and gives Democrats control of a seat long considered safely Republican.

Democrats have swept Nevada's six constitutional offices for the first tiem in over six decades, with Attorney General Aaron Ford defeating Republican Governor Joe Lombardo to become the state's first Black governor.

The election also puts Democrats in control of the governor's office, attorney general, secretary of state, lieutenant governor and state treasurer.

Other winners include Nicole Cannizzaro for attorney general, incumbent Cisco Aguilar for secretary of state, Sandra Jauregui for lieutenant governor and Tya Mathis-Coleman for treasurer.

Democrats also secured a two-thirds supermajority in the Nevada Assembly and are one seat short in the state Senate, with additional races still being decided.

Both statewide ballot questions appear to have passed, although not as strong as previous turnouts.  Question 6 on Abortion Rights is leading by a nearly ⅔ majority, and Question 7 to require voter ID is leading by just over 60%.  That’s less than the previous nearly 70% yes vote.

Nevada Democrats were leading in 33 of 42 races for seats in the Nevada Assembly in early voting results and seven of 11 Nevada Senate races Tuesday evening, providing comfortable majorities but not enough for supermajority status in both chambers.

On the local scene, Incumbents ruled the day as preliminary returns show County Commissioner Jose Noriega winning over George Chachas, County Clerk Nichole Stephey winning re-election over Ray Rivera, and Dylan Frehner retained his seat in District Court in a narrow win over Jane Eberhardy.

The White Pine County Commission will hold a special meeting Thursday morning to address several issues involving the county’s Information Technology Department.

The meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday, November 5th, in the White Pine County Library Conference Room in Ely and will be broadcast on KELY.

Commissioners will consider selecting and appointing an interim IT director, along with setting a salary or stipend for that position.

The agenda also includes consideration of a proposed severance package for the county’s former IT director.  The Commission fired IT Director Jasen Hutchins at last Wednesdays meeting despite praise from the County Recorder, County Assessor, and the Ely Fire Chief.

In addition to the live broadcast, KELY will provide a podcast of the meeting following the conclusion of the meeting.  Just search KELY 1230 98.5 on all podcast platforms.
