A major transmission project is bringing new construction jobs and economic activity to the Ely area.
LS Power, through its Great Basin Transmission affiliate, broke ground Thursday near McGill Highway for the Southwest Intertie Project-North.
The 285-mile, 500-kilovolt line will connect southern Idaho with Robinson Summit near Ely, with construction expected to continue through about 2028.
The project is expected to create roughly 300 construction jobs and generate more than 375 million dollars in regional economic activity — providing a potential boost for businesses, lodging, restaurants and other services in Ely and White Pine County.
The line will also increase Nevada's ability to import and export electricity and strengthen grid reliability.
More than 70 percent of the larger 576-mile transmission corridor will run through Nevada.
The White Pine County Commission convenes Wednesday at 9:00 AM in the White Pine County Library Conference Room in Ely for a busy session packed with community and operational updates.
Highlights from the upcoming agenda include:
- Charters of Freedom Public Hearing (9:30 AM): Community members are invited to share feedback on the location and design for a proposed monument displaying the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Civil Rights Amendments.
- County Baseball Field Upgrades: The board will review a grant agreement to fund improvements for the ballpark at 13th Street and Avenue M.
- Staffing & Operations: Commissioners will address a critical labor shortage declaration for the District Attorney’s Office and vote on adopting a new county Continuity of Operations Plan.
- GIS Tech Contract: A proposed three-year agreement with Geo-Comm for GIS services—capped at $53,474—is up for consideration.

The White Pine County Sheriff’s Office reports several calls for service from Wednesday through Friday.
Two Ely men were arrested Wednesday. Forty-two-year-old Nicholas Walberg was arrested on an Ely Municipal Court warrant, while 40-year-old Jonathan Oxborrow was arrested following a reported battery that caused substantial bodily harm and property damage. His bail was set at 155-thousand dollars.
Deputies also investigated a reported firearm theft from an Ely business. That investigation remains active.
Other calls included domestic disturbances, harassment complaints, welfare checks, and several vehicle collisions involving deer and elk.
On Friday, deputies responded to reports of threats, juveniles trespassing in an abandoned building, a dog running at large, and a report of shots fired from a state highway. That case was referred to Nevada State Police.
The Ely City Council will meet Thursday, September 10th, at five p.m. at the Ely Volunteer Fire Hall.
Among the items on the agenda, council will hold a public hearing at 5:30 on proposed Community Development Block Grant projects and ideas submitted by the public.
Council will also consider establishing a new water-per-gallon fee for contractors, awarding the Orson Avenue Sidewalk Project, and awarding a bid for Phase Three of the Steptoe Valley Trap and Skeet Range Hunter Education Building.
The council will also receive an update on efforts to secure state and federal funding for Ely.
White Pine football exploded for 43 points Friday night, cruising past Yerington 43-to-12 on the road.
The Bobcats snapped an early-season two-game losing streak and picked up their first win of the season, improving to 1-and-2. Yerington falls to 0-and-2.
White Pine returns home Friday night to host West Wendover. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at White Pine High School.
It was a mixed weekend on the soccer pitch for White Pine High School.
The Ladycats battled Dayton to a one-one draw Friday, marking the first tie of the season for White Pine. The Ladycats then fell to the Dust Devils three-nothing Saturday. The loss drops White Pine to two-one-and-one in league play and two-five-and-one overall.
The Ladycats will travel to Pershing County Friday, with kickoff set for two p.m.
On the boys’ side, White Pine split its two matches with Dayton. The Bobcats earned a one-nothing victory Friday, before falling eight-nothing Saturday.
White Pine’s boys will travel to West Wendover Saturday for an 11:45 a.m. match.
A White Pine High School senior is facing a long road to recovery after a serious soccer injury. Landon was injured during a game September fifth, breaking his leg and requiring him to be flown to Utah for surgery. The injury has ended his soccer season and could also keep him from wrestling this year. As Landon begins his recovery, his teammates, coaches, family, friends and the White Pine County community are rallying around him with prayers, encouragement and support.
